Dr. Rama Saharia

Dr. Rama Saharia was a luminary of multifaceted brilliance, leaving an indelible mark as an esteemed educator, dedicated researcher, prolific writer, and a staunch advocate for women's empowerment. Over her illustrious 35-year tenure in the Directorate of Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh, she ascended to the esteemed role of Principal in three out of the four colleges she served, notably overseeing the relocation of Noida Government College to its current premises from Sector 19.
Dr Saharia exemplified academic excellence and versatility that culminated in her academic achievements —a master's degree in psychology and parapsychology, followed by a distinguished doctoral pursuit. Her talents were further honed and celebrated within her intellectually stimulating familial milieu. Her literary contributions enriched the press and scholarly journals, while her melodious voice reverberated through family gatherings, infusing each occasion with joy and harmony.
Dr Rama Saharia belonged to an educated middle class family of U.P. Though girls in the decades of 1950-1960 when she was a student were allowed to acquire higher education, a conservative and tradition-bound background did not allow them to take up proper jobs and a well charted- out professional career. She was the first girl in the family to do a full-time job. She was a first-class student but the focus of the family was always on marriage and home management for a career. Through her strong willpower, Dr Rama pursued her studies after post-graduation and became a research scholar at Delhi University. The real struggle started after her marriage. Her husband was posted outside and a transfer was not possible. They worked at different places for 14 years and stayed apart for the sake of their jobs.Dr Saharia raised a highly educated family in which 4 out of 8 adults are research scholars, and all three of her children hold double master’s degrees. With an expansive mind, progressive ideologies, and a compassionate demeanour, Dr. Saharia left an enduring impression on the countless lives she touched, earning admiration and endearment from all those who crossed her path. Dr Saharia's greatest memory lies in her boundless capacity for love and compassion, extending warmth and support to all within her orbit. Her qualities as a mellifluous singer, adept painter, knitting virtuoso will be cherished forever, and will remain a testament to the transformative power of intellect, talent, and above all, unwavering love.
Without being articulate or a modern-day feminist, Dr Saharia, in her own way, espoused the cause of women empowerment. She helped the poor and underprivileged staff and students in the colleges she taught and wrote on women-related issues in the media. Dr Rama Saharia’s awards have been instituted so that her legacy lives on, and she continues to encourage and inspire girls and young women professionals from modest socio-economic backgrounds who show promise, courage, and compassion in their respective fields.
Dr. Rama Saharia was a distinguished educator, researcher, writer, and quiet champion of women’s empowerment, whose 35-year academic career shaped institutions and lives alike. Through compassion, scholarship, and service, she inspired generations, particularly young women from modest backgrounds, to rise with courage, intellect, and humanity.
Honouring Rama Saharia’s legacy by celebrating women’s achievements across diverse fields.
